The Republic of Hout Bay's flag was at half mast in respect for those who perished in New York in the tragic events of the previous week. However, at East Fort, the newly restored 1765 cannon at East Fort was the centre of attraction  following the annual Cannon Race run by the Hout Bay Harriers.  The Cannon has been wonderfully restored by means of a generous donation from the Roland and Leta Hill Trust and magnificently completed by Gerry de Vries and his team of Cannon Research Projects.  Press Release.

The crowds gather next to the "new" cannon at East Fort for the presentation of the prizes for the sixth Hout Bay Cannon Race. 15th Sept 2001.

Gerry, linstock in hand,  fires the restored cannon on the 206th anniversary of the last time it was fired in anger when a belligerent HMS "Echo" entered the Bay at noon on the 15th Sept 1795. "Gunner" Cecil Graham, representing the Trust stands next to the Flag. From now on this cannon will be used for more peaceful purposes such as signaling the arrival of the first Argus Cyclist or Two Oceans runner! It will also be used on special occasions to salute visiting dignitaries to the Republic of Hout Bay.

The "new" c.1765 gun also sounded on the 11th Nov 2001 when a ceremony of remembrance was organised by the Trust  in recognition of all those who have given or dedicated their lives to the process of the nation building of our country.

The gun was cast in iron at Fingspan in Sweden for the VOC.
