INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP 16 SEPTEMBER 2000

The Heritage Trust was proud to be associated with the initiative outlined below. The amazing feat of collecting almost 10 tons of rubbish in 4 hrs is a fantastic achievement largely due to a small group of dedicated people led by Lauren Robinson, who masterminded and coordinated a team of 750 helpers. This is a remarkable achievement which we applaud. Well done Lolly and your team - we salute you. The attached letter of thanks sent out by Lolly to all helpers tells all.

16 SEPTEMBER 2000

Hout bay Beach Buddies would like to thank everyone for their wonderful help in making this years cleanup a resounding success in many different ways.

People from all walks of life have become aware of the litter problem creeping up slowly and silently becoming harder to handle. The major problem that we have found is PLASTIC of many different shapes and sizes. Try shopping for food not wrapped in plastic. It is extremely difficult to do.

Plastic is the most impossible to recycle as the majority is very dirty and costs too much to collect and the volume does not warrant the fuel costs to get it to the recycling depot. The Plastic Federation have noted this problem and have donated a Bundu Baler to the value of R15,000 to Sheila Hofmeyer at Kronendal School and Bergvliet High, who run recycling depots.

On the day 750 people collected 9 tons 737.8 kilograms in 4 hours. People from Imizamo Yethu and the Harbour village played a very big part in the cleanup which was very rewarding as the awareness campaign and pride in their community is growing.

Beach Buddies have appealed to the local government to help on a municipal level to help cleanup the trash on a large scale on a monthly basis. The aim of these cleanups is to eventually have less trash to collect and have more fun together as a community.

The "weigh in" - almost 10 tons of litter collected in 4 hours!
